Southwoods is a redevelopment site nestled into the mature Hazeldean neighbourhood of Edmonton. Southwoods integrates 264 new dwelling units into five multi-unit apartment buildings geared toward seniors, while retaining and refurbishing 236 existing family-oriented townhomes.
A range of housing options
Rather than razing and redeveloping the site from scratch, the developer, Christenson Developments, retained and refurbished the existing townhomes while densifying the site with 264 new apartment dwelling units. The apartments are geared toward seniors, providing site-based homecare and Alberta Health Services designated supportive living beds. The townhomes are family-oriented rentals—eligible renters, including staff at the seniors facilities on site—can receive a rent reduction of up to 25% through the City of Edmonton’s Cornerstones program administered through Capital Region Housing.
Transportation choices
Southwoods is within easy walking distance to Edmonton Transit Service buses #81, #87, and #782. Vehicle parking is provided on-site, adjacent to the private townhomes and in underground garages for the apartment housing. Internal streets are fully equipped with sidewalks and street lighting.
Integrated care
Southwoods allows people to grow up and grow old without needing to leave the community. Family-oriented townhomes, ample green space, a nearby school and seniors housing on or adjacent to the site create a unique living environment for people of all ages.
Commercial node
Southwoods facilitates a unique opportunity for staff of the nearby seniors buildings to live on site. Additional nearby amenities and employment options include Hazeldean Elementary School and a small neighbourhood commercial strip mall.
